Yes, it’s that wonderful time of year when the world gets a little geekier. It’s Comic-Con!

The international convention started in 1970 and it is now the most recognized convention of it’s type with over 100,000 joining the party. It’s an awesome celebration of what we love including not only comics but films, science fiction/fantasy literature and much more.

Special guests make appearances, often by surprise, including those behind the creation of our beloved comics. Actors/Directors will show up to discuss projects and roles in films as well as sharing interesting stories and in-depth discussions on lore. The action is already underway as things kick off with preview night.

COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL 2013 Hours/Dates:

  • Wednesday, July 17 (Preview Night): 6:00-9:00 PM
  • Thursday, July 18, Friday, July 19, Saturday, July 20: 9:30 AM-7:00 PM
  • Sunday July 21: 9:30 AM-5:00 PM

For a complete schedule and full event details, please head to the official Comic-Con website.

PayPal Goes Galactic With Space Currency

June 27, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

The question that you may or may not have ever asked; what currency will we use in space? PayPal is trying to answer this question by officially launching PayPal Galactic. It’s one of the problems that no one ever really seems to talk about, until now.

I often think about how people could soon be spending their vacation in a “space hotel” and how we could set-up shop on Mars and start building cites and growing our own food there but I never thought about how we would pay for things in these places. It may sound like crazy science fiction movie but I think it’s a great time to start figuring out these problems as space becomes more accessible.

As space tourism programs are opening space travel to ‘the rest of us’ this drives questions about the commercialization of space. We are launching PayPal Galactic, in conjunction with leaders in the scientific community, to increase public awareness of the important questions that need to be addressed,” -David Marcus, PayPal’s President.

Even if spending your vacation on Mars doesn’t happen during your lifetime, it doesn’t mean that it will never happen. It’s the way we are built as humans, we want to explore and push the limits of what we can do and where we can go, so space colonization is highly likely if not completely inevitable. One day, generations after us may need to study their history books to prepare for a test that focuses on the earliest settlers who came to Mars and built the first cities. Perhaps PayPal will be in those books as the pioneers who helped create the first universal space currency.

PayPal is currently working with the SETI Institute (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) to help bring this issue to light and hopefully make all of this happen. PayPal Galactic also has Buzz Aldrin talking about the issue, whom you can see in the video above.

So, What do you think about PayPal Galactic? Are we ready to talk about space currency?

How Does Superman Shave? Bill Nye Chimes In

June 8, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Gillette is running some interesting ads about how Superman shaves and they are asking many famous faces to come up with their best answer. The ads are part of a promotion for the upcoming film Superman: Man of Steel. I’m actually enjoying a lot of the responses in each video, even though I know it’s most likely going to be all about a Gillette razor. The videos are no less interesting though, especially when we get to hear Bill Nye offer up his best theory.

Carrie Fisher will return as Leia in new “Star Wars” films

March 6, 2013 by Karlene Leave a Comment

Carrie Fisher was undoubtedly noticed for her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Recently she sat down with Palm Beach Illustrated for a Q&A session. They asked her if she could confirm her return as Leia in the new saga with Disney and she said “yes”. They also asked her what she thinks Princess Leia would be like today and if she would still be rocking the famous buns, and she answered, “Elderly. She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home [laughs]. I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle. The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized.”

Rumors are still going around that Harrison Ford will return as Han Solo. So What about Mark Hamil? He said last month that George Lucas has spoken to the main cast, and he would not re-cast any of their roles if they decline to return.

The new “Star Wars” saga is to be in theaters in 2015.

Well it looks like the next installment of Star Wars may be directed by J.J Abrams. Disney is apparently in talks with the director in hopes that he will bring the next Star Wars to life. This report comes from EW.

Disney recently acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and shortly after they mentioned plans for another Star Wars film. The new installment is scheduled to be released in 2015. We posted an article about that purchase earlier last year and you can head here for more details.

J.J Abrams has been behind other science fiction films such as Star Trek and now his most recent film work, Star Trek Into Darkness, which is set to hit theaters on May 17th.
