How to Install GNOME Desktop for Ubuntu 18.04

July 15, 2019 by Richard Vincenti Jr 2 Comments

If you have the base install of Ubuntu 18.04 installed without a GUI and would like to add the GNOME desktop to your install, then this is the guide for you!

First, you should always make sure your package lists are up-to-date by running the update command followed by the upgrade command:

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Next, we recommend using Tasksel to install Ubuntu desktop. It’s a really easy way to get you up and running with a GUI and requires less commands. To install Tasksel use this command:

  • sudo apt-get install tasksel -y

After tasksel has finished installing, you can then run the application with sudo:

  • sudo tasksel

Finally, you can simply select Ubuntu desktop and select “OK” to install the GNOME desktop environment for your Ubuntu installation. Once the installation is complete, you can reboot your system and Ubuntu will start with a GUI.

Additionally, you may also notice that Tasksel has a good selection of other software collections that you can also install with this interface. Some options include DNS server, LAMP server, Samba file server and more.

How to Enable a Port on a Cisco Switch

May 28, 2017 by Richard Vincenti Jr 4 Comments

Need to enable a port on a Cisco switch? Look no further!

To begin you need to know what the name of the port is that you want to enable on the switch. This name or Port ID can be found by using the following command.network cables

#show interface status

This command will provide a list of your ports by ID.

For this example, we will use the port Gi1/10 for our switch.

Next, we need to enter privileged EXEC mode on the switch in order to issue the following commands.

To do this, type one of the following commands.

#enable

or

#en

Now, we need to enter configuration command followed by terminal to enter global configuration mode.

#configure terminal

or

#conf t

Next, we tell the switch which interface to configure.

(config)#interface Gi1/10

Now you can assign the selected port to a VLAN. You can use whatever VLAN number you would like but for our example we will use VLAN 10.

(config-if)#switchport access vlan 10

Lastly, we want to bring this port (interface) up or enable it. To do use one of the following commands.

(config-if)#no shutdown

or

(config-if)#no shut

That’s it. Your port should now be enabled and assigned to the VLAN you choose. You can to this to any other available port on your switch. If you want to add other ports to this same network then simply repeat this process using your other port ID’s and assign them to the same VLAN.

If you would like to check on the status of the port (interface) that you just set up use the following commands.

Exit config mode by performing one of the following methods.

Use Ctrl-Z to exit configuration mode.

or

Type “exit” until you are out of configuration mode.

(If you followed this example you will likely need to enter the exit command two times in a row.)

Lastly, we can now show the status of the port(interface) you choose by entering the following command. We are going to stick with our example port for this command.

#show run interface Gi1/10

How to View FPS in Diablo III Reaper of Souls

August 17, 2015 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Diablo3ROSLogo FPS

Are you having any issues with lag in Diablo III Reaper of Souls for PC or Mac ? You may want to check on your frames per second or (FPS).  This information is normally not displayed by default but it’s really easy to enable and you can do it without any add-ons.

  • If you’re playing Diablo III, during gameplay, you can simply press Control+ R on your keyboard to view your FPS. This also works the same way for Mac Keyboards.

As far as resolving issues with drops in frame rate, you might want to first try changing some of your graphics settings to see if there are any noticeable improvements. You may also want to make sure that you have the latest drivers for your specific graphics card. Another good troubleshooting technique is to check Task Manager if your running Windows or the Activity Monitor on Mac OS X. These programs allow you to ensure that there are no other programs running in the background that could degrade the performance of your game. If your running the game on a standard mechanical hard drive, then you may want to check to see if your disk is in good health or if  it needs to be defragmented.

Another possible cause if lag in Diablo III Reaper of Souls is network lag. Diablo III is an online game and is therefore susceptible to poor quality networks and slower bandwidth speeds. Network lag can also feel a lot like hardware performance lag as far as FPS go. You should always check your internet connection when you’re having issues, it might not even be your hardware that’s causing the issue.

These are just a few basic steps you can take to start troubleshooting your game performance. These basic system checks can be utilized for just about any game that your having issues with, not just Diablo III

Still having issues with the game? Need more answers? One of the best ways to get help is to try and get answers from the community on Blizzard’s forums. Here, you can get in touch with other gamers to get information about your problems and you may even get a response from Blizzard on the subject.

Pagerank and How to Get It

August 4, 2015 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Does this sound familiar? You have managed to get your website up and running but now you need people to visit it. You run a Google search to see if your content appears in the search results. Unfortunately, you don’t see any of your hard work or perhaps it does show up, but is appears at the end of the list. Let’s face it, being on the bottom of the list or completely omitted doesn’t feel great. It’s not that big of a deal! After all, you’re just getting started, there is absolutely no reason to get discouraged! With time, effort and patience you can and will start seeing results.number 1 a white background

There are many methods involved in getting your content to show up in Google’s search results, and those methods are collectively referred to as SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

In general, SEO helps to make your content appear in the search results of a search engine. One aspect of a broader SEO strategy is to increase your Pagerank.

In the world of Google search, Pagerank is a ranking system that shows the importance of a website. The scale for this ranking system is from 0 – 10. When you first publish your site or some specific content, you will have a ranking of 0 on this scale. With a few steps and some patience, you can begin to increase your ranking. Let’s hit on a few of those steps now.

Let’s face it, being on the bottom of the search list or completely omitted doesn’t feel great. It’s not that big of a deal! After all, you’re just getting started, there is absolutely no reason to get discouraged! With a little time, effort and patience you can and will start seeing results. – Richard Vincenti Jr

1. Quality Content!

Yes, the number one spot in this guide is the quality of your content. Don’t try to get ahead with gimmicky methods, they just won’t work. Even if you happen to gain some ground with poorly written content, it is likely that either Google’s Algorithms or one of their employees will eventually catch on to what you’re doing and your site will lose it’s position and possibly be removed completely from a given search result.

The best thing you can do is write original, quality content that is relevant and isn’t filled with nonsense. Try to stick with something unique or compelling. If the subject you’re covering is widely discussed, then make sure your content has your unique perspective and style. This will not only engage your audience better but it will also prove to Google that your website is important and relevant, which will lead to an increase in pagerank.

2. Use Good Keywords but not Too Many

Keywords are an important part of SEO in general, they help with getting your content in front of people. On your site, you need to use keywords that are not only relevant, but are likely to be searched for. You can check on the most popular keywords by using a keyword tool like Google’s Keyword planner. Just be aware that overpacking your post full of keywords will lead to poor results. Google will notice your keyword crunching, (as I like to call it) and will consider your content to be unimportant and of poor quality.

3.  Work on Backlinks

As your site begins to gain visitors you will start to build up a reputation. You should try to reach out to other websites that share similar interests and have a good reputation with their own audience and with Google. Make sure that their content is relevant, don’t just swap links, make sure the end result is providing the visitor with good solid information on the topic they are searching for. Reach out to others and send them an email, then ask to share content or maybe do a guest post for them. Remember that they need backlinks and content as well. Post on other websites that hold discussions and provide answers to questions and then link back to your site.

I don’t want to overstate this, but in the world of SEO it really does help to make friends out there. Just reach out to people whenever you can and share your common interests and goals.  – Richard Vincenti Jr

4. Work on Keeping things Up-to-Date

This one is simple, Google likes updated content and so do your visitors. Give people a reason to come to your website and then give them a reason to return. Another benefit to adding more content is that you will increase your chances of hitting on a topic that is highly desirable. This will lead to traffic, backlinks and eventually Pagerank. You also want to continue building a good library of content to provide a richer experience for your visitors and give search engines more and more to pull from.

5. Be Patient

Even after you have taken these steps to improve your SEO and in turn your Pagerank. You will likely not see an increase in your ranking for some time. Google’s systems will eventually come along and consider your website to be of higher importance, but that only happens (as far as I know) a few times a year. If you keep up the hard work and stay dedicated, you should be rewarded with an audience and a higher ranking.
