3D Realms Sues Gearbox

June 15, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Anyone remember Duke Nukem Forever? It was in development for over a decade and it looked like it might never happen until Gearbox came along and wanted to acquire the rights to the game. Once they took over in 2009 they eventually released the title in 2011 to mediocre reviews. Although it did capture some of the greatness of Duke Nukem as a character, there was much to be desired and the game still didn’t feel complete.

Fast forward to today and things are heating up between the two companies as 3D Realms is now suing Gearbox for $2 million claiming that they are withholding owed royalties. Gearbox’s VP of Marketing, Steve Gibson, responded to a request for further details from Joystiq with the following statement.

Everyone wished that 3DR’s game was better received by the market for the benefit of gamers and profit to its creators,” Gibson continued. “While 3DR might not wish the reality that the results make clear, 3DR turned out to be the only beneficiary of the deal. Gearbox Software, meanwhile, experienced damage to its credibility and loss of its money.”

It looks like there are fuzzy details surrounding this lawsuit and it’s probably in the best interest of both companies to get this situation cleaned up and unfortunately that means heading to court. This lawsuit was originally discovered by Duke4.net, where they have an image of the filing.

Amazing 3D View of Known Universe

June 14, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr 1 Comment

The universe in which we exist is unimagineably immense and we only know of a very small portion of it. That “small” portion however is massive all by itself and you can get a real feel for just how massive it is by watching this awesome video that was posted by the Los Angeles Times  which shows us a 3D map of the known universe.

It’s incredible to see how all of this data comes together and it’s interesting to see the size, scale and shape of what we know is out there. The video is just over 17 minutes long and features lots of cool animations, some of which show portions of the universe that we barely know about. The map covers about 120 million light-years of space and time and features narration by Helene Courtois of the University of Lyon in France.

Tested, A Whole Lot of Geekery

June 13, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

TestedLogo As a geek, I spend a lot of time not only creating and compiling content for our site but also enjoying content from others as well and today I thought I would take a moment to share with you one of my favorite places to visit on the web.

Tested.com is a website that covers technology, science, art and basically just awesome and geeky stuff in general. Tested was created by Will Smith and Norman Chan and now features Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage from MythBusters. I am big fan of MythBusters and basically anything Adam and Jamie do in general. So you could only imagine that I would be extremely excited to see their involvement in the content of Tested.

The website isn’t the only content you can get from Tested, they also have a great YouTube page that is filled with great videos which range from getting a hands on look at the latest electronics, to going Inside Adam Savage’s Cave where you can witness the creative genius in action as he creates something amazing from nothing. Want to see the Hyneman in his natural habitat? Now you can by watching Inside Jaime’s Shop.

So, if you can’t seem to get enough geekery in your life ( and honestly, who couldn’t use a little more?) check out Tested.

Titanfall is Definitely a Game Changer

Titanfall looks nothing like any first person shooter I’ve seen. With it’s focus on a story driven multiplayer experience and unique gameplay it looks to be a big hit. Titanfall combines two games into one as you, the pilot, fight on the ground like a more traditional FPS but then you have the option to hop into a giant mechanical extension of yourself, a Titan, and blast your enemies away.

I haven’t been this excited for a game like this in a while, mostly because FPS games have become very run-of-the-mill and I only tend to engage in a select few that I have become familiar with over the years and that have a good multiplayer experience. Sometimes I’ll commit  if the game has storyline that’s compelling but all too often I’m let down .

It’s refreshing to see a new spin on the genre and hopefully it will be as much fun as it looks. Unfortunately, it looks like PS4 owners will have to wait to find out if they will get a chance to duel as a Titan as Titanfall has only been officially been announced for PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Nintendo Direct E3 did show off some big titles for the Wii U including Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World and Super Smash Bros. However, Wii U owners will have to wait quite a bit longer before many of these titles are available. Some of these titles won’t be available until 2014, but it’s nice to get a sneak preview of what’s going on behind the doors at Nintendo and things are looking promising.
