The Online Shopping Revolution

October 9, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

The way we shop has changed drastically since the dawn of the internet and the retail landscape is changing with it.E-commerce concept

It’s no big surprise that millions of Americans shop online, but what’s interesting is how this impacts brick and mortar stores like Best Buy. We have already seen the decline of many retail companies over the years and with more people shopping online than ever before, it makes you wonder how these businesses will fair.

Convenience plays a huge role in the success of online shopping but other factors like pricing, selection, auction sites, and the ability to easily flip to another page to check on competitor pricing  are also major contributing factors that pull in the masses. User reviews, although sometimes manipulated, are also another major advantage to shopping online.

It’s not just the convenience of online shopping that has been pulling customers away from their local stores, it’s also the general experience itself that has also been on the decline. Many in-store associates seem uninterested in assisting you and when they do help, their answers to your questions are often improvised and loaded with inaccurate and misleading information. Unfortunately, this lackadaisical style of customer service has become commonplace in our modern day retail environment.

The transition of physical media to digital media has also had a significant impact on storefronts around the country. Many americans prefer to get their music, books, magazines and movies online. Going back to the days before the iPod you could find a record store in almost any city, now you’re luck if you find one within 25 miles of your location. iTunes by itself has almost completely replaced several major sections in retail stores.

Long gone are the days when that expert sales associate explained every detail of every model, to aid you in making an educated and informed decision when purchasing a new product. Today, we rely more on YouTube reviews and our favorite websites to help us make these decisions. We watch unboxing videos to find out exactly what it will be like to bring home a new product and open it up for ourselves. What’s so great about all of these aforementioned means of researching a product? Well, many of the people who create this content really care about what they’re talking about and usually offer accurate information about the product they are reviewing, unlike the in-store associate.

Even with all the benefits of shopping online, there are still many good reasons to shop at a brick-and-mortar retail stores. One major advantage retail stores have over online competition is immediate satisfaction. When you make a purchase online you typically need to wait a few days or even weeks before you receive your new product and if you want to get it any faster you will have to shell out more money. With your local store you can open your new purchase within minutes of buying it and that instant gratification is nice. What about returns? Online returns are not always so straightforward and you can’t necessarily know ahead of time whether or not you will need to return the product before you receive it, this means that you have to take in consideration that you will not only be waiting to receive your item but, if you need to return it, you will also be waiting for the manufacturer to receive the defective or unwanted item and then send you a replacement or refund and this could take up a significant amount of time.

So who is really loosing here? Many would argue that these once dominant retail companies could just adapt with the market and embrace the online world, which many have done so in a significant way, but how does that affect our jobs? Earlier I mentioned that the employees were usually less than enthused to be assisting you, but is this necessarily their fault? Declining retail stores are most likely not re-investing in their company from the bottom up and that usually means theres also a big disconnect between the corporate office and the customer facing employees, which will ultimately result in a lack of interest in the company and it’s health. It really is a vicious cycle that ultimately results in store closures.

I feel that ultimately, both online and brick and mortar stores can and will co-exist, but with some physical stores having a reduced presence in our neighborhoods. I say some stores because another thing to consider here is that not everything fits well into an online shopping experience. In the meantime I see this as an overall win for consumers and as for most major retail companies, as long as they adapt and create new and innovative ways to interact with their customers, they should be just fine.

Are you looking for a simple, strategy based game that looks good and has multiplayer support? Well maybe you should check out Battle Monkeys!

Battle Monkeys is a 3D multiplayer game that can also be played against the computer. The point of the game is to defeat all of the other monkeys around you by using the floor tiles in the game area to either deal damage or protect yourself.

These floor tiles move downward each turn and you can either stay where your are or jump to another tile. You have to do some planning and think ahead a few moves if you plan on defeating your opponents.

Some moves include bringing down meteors form the sky to crush your opponents, shooting poison darts, blasting them with shotguns and more.

The graphics are nice and the monkeys are hilarious, you can easily get hooked on playing this game. As you play on, you can level up and unlock other characters to play and choose from many different outfits for your battle monkey to wear.

The game is available for Android and iOS and can also be found in the Mac App store.

This game should definitely help you break your boredom. Links to obtain the game are below along with a short video.

Hacker Takes On World of Warcraft

October 7, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

A hacker was able to clear out whole cities by running around with level 1 characters and killing all NPC’s and players within Stormwind and Orgrimmar over and over again, making the game virtually un-playble. European servers were hit first then US servers were hit shortly after. There are some videos that document what was happening. Blizzard community manager Nethaera posted the following statement about the issue and it being fully addressed.

“Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities. This exploit has already been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable. It’s safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth.”

“As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation. If you have information relating to this incident, please email hacks@blizzard.com. We apologize for the inconvenience some of you experienced as a result of this and appreciate your understanding.”

Microsoft Security Essentials

October 6, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

I was asked today about which programs are good for general Windows PC protection against a variety of malware and as always I suggest both free and paid applications but somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft Security Essentials comes up as one of my favorite free anti-malware solutions.

What’s to like about MSE? Well, for starters it’s free but it’s also very easy to use. MSE doesn’t have a ton of garbage filling up the UI and it offers a selection of easy to use and useful features. MSE doesn’t bog down your system, it simply does what it needs to do and then quietly monitors the system in the background, providing real-time protection with out eating up a ton system resources.

MSE is updated daily to ensure that the latest threats won’t get through. Scan times are fast compared to some other applications and the only time you have to wait for any significant amount of time during a scan is when MSE performs it’s first system scan or when you run a “Full Scan”, otherwise, my scans only take about a minute or two with the longest scan time being approximately five minutes, when using “Quick Scan”.

Another thing that I enjoy about MSE is that it doesn’t seem to get in the way of the stuff that I know isn’t malware. I know this sounds strange but if you have used a variety of ant-malware products, you probably understand where I am coming from on this one. Having to go in and make exceptions for all the software that I know is supposed to be running on my system is time consuming and annoying, not to mention that you inevitability end up missing something that runs in the background and supports another main application, then you get to spend the next twenty minutes trying to find out what’s being blocked and causing your application to crash and or stall.

Just like any other malware solution it’s never going to be perfect and as always the best protection against malware is common sense. Tread the inter-webs carefully  and be proactive in reducing your risk of getting malware. Stick to sites that you know and don’t open random emails with weird attachments. I know it sounds like a no brainer but it happens all the time, sometimes we get tricked into doing something we shouldn’t. Even email from friends and family can be loaded with bad stuff, often these “loaded” emails are passed along even without the senders knowledge, so be careful.

Microsoft Security Essentials works on all three of the most popular Windows versions including XP,Vista, and Windows 7, the only major requirement here is that you have a genuine copy of Windows running. If your unhappy with your current malware solution, I recommend giving MSE a shot, remember you can always go back to what you had before and did I mention it’s free?

You can obtain Microsoft Security Essentials here.
