Featured App: ILoveFilm

February 28, 2013 by Karlene Leave a Comment

Looking for an iPad app that acts as a small light box for tracing?

I discovered ILoveFilm while searching for a free light box app. Even though the name and purpose of this app was to be able to look at negative images from a camera, I have found that using it as a light box to trace my sketches was the best one I could find.

The way it works is super simple, you open the app and you touch the little button to turn on the light. You also have a bar to move up or down to adjust the brightness. Thats it!

ILoveFilm

The one thing that bothers me about using an iPad as a light box, is when you rest your hand on it, the touch screen goes a little crazy and sometimes closes the app and then opens other things due to the multitouch gestures. I found that if you go into Settings>General>Turn OFF Multitasking Gestures, this turns off the ability to use four or five fingers to: pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking bar, and to swipe left or right between apps. Now that the gestures are turned off, resting your hand on the screen while tracing, will not give you anymore problems. Now just make sure the brightness is turned up all the way on the iPad and you are ready to trace!

I recommend this app for small artwork due to the screen size. Other then that, it’s free and extremely simple to use!

Only available on Apple iPad.

iPhone 4S Users Get an Important Update

February 11, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

iOS

Apple recently pushed out iOS 6.1 which had many new features including updates to Apple’s Map app and Safari, but a few of those features were unintended. iPhone 4s users have been experiencing poor cell phone performance along with other issues. Other bugs also plagued Apple’s mail app, causing network problems when iOS 6.1 devices connect to networks with other mail clients like Microsoft Exchange.

Yet another issue that has popped up with this update included battery life problems as well. If you own an iPhone 4s you should make sure you’re up-to-date with the latest update from Apple (6.1.1). Of course if you haven’t made the update to 6.1 then you should be also fine.

Product Review: Retractable Car Charger for iPhone

January 30, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

With all of our smart phones and devices made to be our everything, we can’t have them dying on the road. Most people use car chargers nowadays, and recently my last one broke so I was in the market for a new one. The last one I owned had a long cord and when I wasn’t using it just got in the way or tangled up when trying to put it away.

I thought this retractable car charger was a great idea so I had to get it. With it’s neat retractable cord there’s no wires hanging all over the car and in the way, and prevents tangles. Another nice feature about this device is that there’s an extra USB port, which can be used to hook up many other usb powered devices or to charge two devices at once. There’s also plenty of cord to go around at a total length of 90cm.

The bottom line is it’s a great charger, especially for the price and I haven’t found anything about it I don’t like. If you are looking for a great iPhone charger at a good price, I recommend this one.

For more details on this charger and to purchase, go to MobileFun.com or if you’re looking for other iPhone 5 chargers.

Blue LED indicator when working

jOBS Gets Criticism From Wozniak

January 25, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

The latest scene from the new movie about Steve Jobs, jOBS, is now making it’s way around the web and as interesting as it is, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, says it’s totally wrong. In a conversation with Gizmodo, Woz goes on to mention that the scene we see here in the clip above, never even happened and that the personalities are way off.

He continued on in an email to say this:

“Totally wrong. Personalities and where the ideas of computers affecting society did not come from Jobs. They inspired me and were widely spoken at the Homebrew Computer Club. Steve came back from Oregon and came to a club meeting and didn’t start talking about this great social impact. His idea was to make a $20 PC board and sell it for $40 to help people at the club build the computer I’d given away. Steve came from selling surplus parts at HalTed he always saw a way to make a quick buck off my designs (this was the 5th time).

The lofty talk came much further down the line.

I never looked like a professional. We were both kids. Our relationship was so different than what was portrayed. I’m embarrassed but if the movie is fun and entertaining, all the better. Anyone who reads my book iWoz can get a clearer picture.”

It’s no surprise that hollywood got the details wrong and often they change things up to make something work on film a little better, but this is just a little silly. You want to be in the ballpark not out in the parking lot when it comes to bringing a true story to life. It makes you wonder why they didn’t utilize a bit of consultation before solidifying the script. Just getting the clothing right would have been nice.

With all of that being said, I don’t want to completely trash a film that I have only seen one clip of. It’s nice to see that a story like this is being brought to hollywood, despite it’s flaws. Not only is this story interesting but it’s inspiring and that’s something a lot of today’s films just don’t offer. Although I can’t help but see Ashton as Kelso at times, he does seem to pull off the look of Steve Jobs in the early days pretty well. Despite Wozniak’s comments I would still like to watch the film in it’s entirety.

Featured App: Candy Crush

January 9, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Candy Crush is a bejeweled-like game mixed with Candy Land where you have to match three or more like candies to break them away. You can get boosters by matching four or five. Four, you get a striped candy that can destroy a whole row, and five, a doughnut that will get rid of all of one color on the screen.

There are 125 levels with cute little short stories as you play through. This game is very addictive and the music is catchy. As the levels go up in number they get harder and harder to beat. You have 5 turns to lose with or else you must wait for a timer to regenerate turns. You can add friends from Facebook and ask them for help and turns. You will also need friends to help you move on to new stories. The game will prompt you that you need three friends to give you tickets to get across to the new levels.

The only thing I don’t enjoy in this game, is I feel like I am being forced to purchase (with real money) boosters for the levels. Some levels I have played numerous times and it seems impossible without them. I have not purchased anything in this game, and I have moved along slowly. Some go faster and there are ones that I am stuck on forever, but it’s just the luck of the board I guess. Either way, I still play it, and it’s still pretty fun.
