Why Pac Man Stops Working After Level 255

April 3, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr 1 Comment

PacManKS

Very rarely do people play Pac Man and reach levels in the 200’s but if you happen to hang in there long enough, something rather odd occurs after you get past level 255.

You reach what is referred to as a “kill screen”. This kill screen essentially renders the game unplayable and you start to see some really strange stuff going on. This isn’t just exclusive to Pac Man either, other arcade classics such as Donkey Kong and Dig Dug also have kill screens.

So what’s behind all of this? Why isn’t there some type of formal ending? Well, the folks behind Numberphile have put together a great video that explains exactly why this happens.

This is supposedly a picture of the “Samsung Galaxy S Tab”. This is not an official picture by any means but it does look really nice and it would make a lot of sense for Samsung to continue to evolve the tablet from one of what I believe is their best products, the Samsung Galaxy line.

Ruling Says Digital Content Can’t Be Resold

April 1, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

As digital content begins to play a bigger role in our society we have to begin to try to understand it more and that includes in what ways do we actually own our digital goods. When you make a digital purchase your not actually buying something physical.

It’s kind of strange to think about, but what we’re really doing is buying the rights to use the said digital goods. Some people have started to look at this and wondered that if we own specific rights to use something then we should be able to sell those rights to others and we would then be effectively forfeiting our own rights to use the content.Digital Lock

Sounds pretty straight forward right? I give my rights that I bought to you at a discounted price. Well, as always, there is going to be a huge debate on whether this kind of stuff is actually legal or not and considering this is all brand new, we’re going to have to work that out in court.

This is exactly what has just happened as a federal judge in a case involving Capitol Records v. ReDigi, has just ruled that attempting to resell digital goods is illegal.

The general idea keeping this kind of activity alive was based on the first-sale doctrine, which allows someone who has legally purchased copyrighted material to resell it. This sounds like it should apply to digital content as well but the judge decided that even though Redigi makes users confirm that they have no existing copies and that the uploader will no longer have access to the files after the transaction is made, they still make copies despite ReDigi’s efforts.

This presents a clear challenge for companies like Apple who have plans to offer up a type of “used digital content” system. This also makes it less appealing to move to an all digital platform as used movie, music, and gaming stores will become obsolete and there will be no similar alternative.

Blizzard Celebrates 15 Years of StarCraft

March 31, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

15yearsSC

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since March 31, 1998, when StarCraft first captured our imaginations and for some of us, became a solid part of our childhood. StarCraft has also greatly contributed to the online competitive gaming world, even though at the time we couldn’t have known how much it would grow.

So, what’s the best part about all of this? Well, we’ve got many years of StarCraft ahead of us!

Blizzard is offering up a feat of strength for StarCraft players that will allow you to unlock 3 new portraits that pay homage to classic StarCraft along with getting a special achievement “15 Years of StarCraft” .

So how do you get the achievement?

Just play one game of StarCraft II in any online mode before 11:59 p.m. PDT on April 17.

Beginning March 31, play one Arcade, Custom, Ranked, Training, Unranked, or Versus A.I. game to earn the StarCraft 15-Year Anniversary Feat of Strength achievement. As soon as you’ve received the achievement, all three portraits will be permanently unlocked in your StarCraft II character profile.

You get see Blizzard’s official post about the anniversary on battle.net.
