World of Warcraft Movie Gets a Director

Duncan Jones, who directed Source Code and Moon will now be directing the live-action film based on the MMORPG by Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft. The film has been trying to pick up steam over the last few years but hasn’t had much momentum until recently. Movies based on video games haven’t done so well over the years but hopefully this film will capture the essence of what has made World of Warcraft so successful over the years. The original game was released back in 2004 and has completely changed the company that created it, Blizzard Entertainment, due to it’s massive success.

Given the success of superhero movies, there is no reason why a movie about a video game with such a massive amount of lore behind it, can’t do just as well. With good writers and a solid cast we could see something worth watching. Many lore fans will argue that the story is difficult to put on screen but if the Lord of the Rings can translate well then so can WoW. Legendary Pictures is behind the film and hopes to see it release sometime in 2015.

Here is the official blue post from Blizzard:

We are pleased to announce that Duncan Jones, director of critically-acclaimed films Source Code and Moon, has signed on with Legendary Pictures to direct the upcoming live-action film based on the Warcraft universe. Click here for more info.

Legendary is keeping its script, written by Charles Leavitt, under wraps. The Warner Bros.-based production and finance outfit is eyeing a fall 2013 start and a 2015 release. Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive produce while Chris Metzen will co-produce for Blizzard. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing for Legendary along with Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. Warcraft is expected to have a budget north of $100 million.

Wind Waker Going HD, What About Ocarina of Time?

January 28, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

(The New Legend of Zelda talk starts at 29:38 in the video above)

Nintendo recently announced that they are going to remake The Legend of  Zelda: The Wind Waker in HD. They mentioned that seeing the game in HD actually brought new life to the game in an unexpected way, and from the images they displayed in the video, I would have to agree. This is a pretty cool idea and was actually quite a surprise, I don’t think I ever imagined Nintendo doing anything like this before.

The one thing that stuck out in my mind though when this announcement was released was why this game over others? Why not remake games like The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 in HD. I would gladly re-buy these games and I don’t think I’m alone. This would be amazing to say the least and just like Wind Waker, these games would feel like brand new life was breathed into them. This is something that I really hope Nintendo considers doing, it could really bring back some appeal to the Virtual Console. For now we will just have to wait and see what Nintendo has up it’s creative sleeves.

Here are some some screenshots from the new HD version of Legend of  Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Blizzard Reveals StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Opening Cinematic

January 23, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Blizzard Entertainment has just revealed the opening cinematic for StarCraft: II Heart of the Swarm and it’s nothing short of spectactuar. The cinematic team at Blizzard always has something amazing for us and this cinematic is no different, they really set the bar high for the industry and I wish they would do feature length cinematics. This opener really helps build anticipation and set the tone for this upcoming expansion.

X-Play Series Finale

Yes, it’s true, the long running X-Play is coming to an end, but not without a final show. The series finale will be an hour long show that goes over the best moments of the past along with some surprise guests.

X-Play has undergone many changes since it first hit the airwaves as GameSpot TV then Extended Play, but it has always brought us great reviews along with a little comedy. Let us not forget  some of the talent that made this show possible, including Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Kristin Adams (Holt) , Blair Herter, Kate Botello,  and Jessica Chobot. I have been a big fan of the series since the earlier days (ZDTV/Tech TV) along with many other great shows including the Screen Savers and Call for Help. It’s sad to see it go, this show was one of my favorite shows, but the times are changing and the network is on the way out.

The series finale will air Wednesday, January 23rd at 6/5c.
