A Quick Guide to Understanding the Equinox

March 20, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

NorthHemiSeasons

The Earth is tilted in relation to the sun. Earth’s axial tilt to orbit is 23.44°. On March 20th 2013, this marked the Spring Equinox for the northern hemisphere. The Fall Equinox is in September and vice versa for the southern hemisphere. The Equinox is the point at which the Earth is neither leaning towards or away from the sun. The sunlight that hits the Earth is evenly distributed across the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. From space, the terminator (where night meets day on the Earth’s surface) appears to be perfectly straight from north to south.

After the equinox, the sunlight begins to either become more direct or less direct depending on which hemisphere you live in. The Solstice is the point at which the sun appears at either it’s highest or lowest point in the sky or when the Earth is tilted all the way towards or away from the sun. These are known as the summer and winter solstices.

Interestingly, the orientation of the Earth’s axis actually changes very slowly before making a complete circle every 25,800 years.

The illustration above shows how the tilt of the Earth and it’s location in orbit around the sun, change how light falls on the Earth’s surface. For a really cool view of the Earth undergoing seasonal changes in sunlight, you can view this NASA animation made from images from a geosynchronous satellite above Earth.

How to Show Hidden Files in OS X

March 19, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

HiddenOSXFiles

Sometimes you need to access files that are normally hidden by default, but these files can sometimes be critical to the proper operation of the operating system and are therefore hidden for a reason. This means that it isn’t always easy to “unhide” these files as developers want to try to prevent less experienced computer users from deleting things accidentally. However, if you’re a geek then chances are you know exactly what you’re doing and you need direct access to hidden files in OS X.

Fortunately, “unhiding” files in OS X is very easy. Just open Terminal and enter the following command.

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

If you find you no longer have the need to view hidden files, you can hide them again by adding a “NO” at the end of the command.

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

Once you have entered either one of these commands, you need to relaunch Finder in order for the changes to take effect.

Relaunching Finder

One of the easiest ways to relaunch Finder is to hold down the “Option” Key and then click and hold the “Finder” icon. You can also hold down the option key and “Right-Click” the Finder icon. You should see the option to relaunch. After you relaunch Finder, you should see your changes take effect.

How To Test Your LCD Monitor Calibration

March 18, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr 1 Comment

LED Abstract Image

If you’re finicky about your LCD displays and you want to make sure you’ve got everything dialed in correctly then there’s a great website you can go to that will help you make sure you’ve got everything right.

The Lagom LCD monitor test pages, offer up a variety of test images that can be used to not only determine proper calibration but overall quality of a particular display. As the website mentions you can also download the images to a USB thumb-drive to test displays is a retail environment. I used this page today to recalibrate my LCD monitor and it looks much better.

It can be difficult to tell sometimes whether things are off or not by simply looking at a photograph and that’s why these test pages really help. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully and you will be on your way to display calibration perfection.

Want to know what color depth your display and graphics hardware are currently using? You can head to NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) reference test page here.

How To Play a DVD in Windows 8

March 17, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

If you haven’t already noticed, you can’t play a DVD by default in Windows 8. Yep, sounds weird but it’s true. Fortunately, there’s a great application out there that gets the job done and then some.

VLC Media Player is the simple solution to this problem. If you haven’t used this great application yet then your missing out. It plays all kinds of formats, almost all of them, and best of all, it’s completely free! You can customize your player with skins, work with filtering effects, and it even has streaming support. This is a very robust little application and it’s worth downloading.

VLC Media Player is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux and you can get it at the official site, VideoLAN.org.

How to Fix Lag With Diablo III and More on Macbook Pro Retina

March 12, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Apple Logo

OS X Version 10.8.2 brought a few unwanted features to Macbook Pro Retina display owners. The main issue seems to be serious lag in many games, most notably Diablo III. Another issue  users were reporting seems to be the fan not running correctly, and that’s never good.

There’s Good News

Apple has released an update along side OS X 10.8.3 that corrects these issues. You can get more information on that update here. If your not interested in that update for some reason or are unable to update, you can follow the instructions below for a temporary fix, otherwise this issue should be resolved.

There’s a quick fix for this issue that will get your Macbook Pro Retina (MBPr) back to it’s peak performance in no time. All you should need to do is reset the System Management Controller (SMC). For the best instructions on how to do this I recommend just going straight to Apple’s documentation which you can find here.

*This should speed up everything, from Desktop UI to gaming!

*Be sure to follow the instructions specifically for your type of computer. In this case it seems that only the MBPr is having issues.
