Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover

April 26, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

If there’s one accessory that’s pretty much an essential it’s got to be the case. Our brand new shiny phones are so elegant and sleek but they are vulnerable. They fall out of our pockets when we lean over, they slide across multiple surfaces and just by holding them we are actually causing wear and tear on our phones. It’s very rare that I see anyone using a smart phone these days without some sort of protective case, and that brings us to the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The latest and greatest from Samsung has yet to truly arrive, but it’s never too early to scope out some accessories. In fact, one case is just as sleek as the new S4 itself and you know it will fit perfectly because it’s made by Samsung. It’s the Samsung Galaxy S4 Flip Cover.

The Samsung Flip Cover comes in two flavors, one has a “view cover” that allows you to see important information without opening the cover while the other covers the entire front display for complete protection. Both cases are extremely thin and lightweight, this is nice considering Samsung has spent so much time trying to make the device powerful yet lightweight and comfortable to use. We don’t want to make our phone bulky just by adding a cover to it.

Overall, this case is lightweight, durable and features a brushed metal look on the front of the flip cover and a glossy rear cover the matches the actual phone design. I really like the look of the new S4 and matching the phone’s design was pretty clever. This is a great case for the soon to be available Galaxy S4.

You can pick up either case for $34.99 along with many other great accessories.

Samsung Flip Cover Features:

• Enhanced protection for the Samsung Galaxy S 4
• Available in multiple colors
• Soft felt liner protects against smudges and dirt
• Front cover folds over for easy access to the phone’s screen
• Back cover replaces the phone’s back, maintaining the Galaxy S 4’s sleek design

How To Skip Activation on The Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Fascinate

April 19, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr 10 Comments

samsungGalaxyS3

Sometimes you find yourself wanting to use a phone for Wi-Fi, gaming only, or maybe you just need to access content on an old phone but you can’t seem to get past the activation screen.

There has to be a way to make an “un-activated” phone more useful. Well, there is, and it only requires a secret key press combination to get you past the activation screen.

Obviously, you will not have the “full” functionality of the phone, but at least you don’t have to use it as a paperweight.

For the Samsung Galaxy S3 press this key combination:

  • Bottom left corner
  • Bottom right corner
  • Bottom left corner
  • Bottom right corner
  • Volume up

* TIP: You should be on the language selection screen when entering the key combination.

For the Samsung Fascinate:

  • Enter the emergency dialer
  • Dial *#83786633
  • Press Send
  • Press Home Key

Looking at The Business of Tech and How To Make a Smart Purchase

October 1, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Cellphone with dollarsHave you ever just stopped and looked at the technology around you? Take your smart phone for example, it’s pretty amazing how much power these little devices have. Gaming on your phone was virtually non-existant 10 years ago and now we can do just about anything including having a face-to-face conversation with someone.

When we first get our new shiny device home we feel great about our purchase and can’t wait to use it. However, with todays tech culture we quickly lose this good feeling as internet buzz and advertisements start to roll in featuring a new product that outshines ours. This phenomena isn’t anything new, it’s been going on like this forever, but it’s the pace at which change is happening that really makes you feel left out.

It used to be that when you bought something it would last you for a few years or more before you needed to update, now it only takes about a year or sometimes even just a few months before we feel pressure to buy the latest and greatest. Were are told our current gadget is inferior and won’t be able to have this feature or our current device won’t work with this version of new software, then we are asked to shell out the big bucks again to play catch up.

So, what are we going to do about this? Is this ever going to change?  No, quite honestly it will probably get worse if anything. Is this really a bad thing though? I’m not so sure. I think that keeping the industry moving forward does drive the economy and can breed innovation, although I think that most of these updates are mostly cosmetic to begin with, but I digress.  It’s really about the consumer (us) and how we decide on what to buy and what not to buy. Even if you can afford it, upgrading every year can really put a hurting on you financially.

The idea here is to really think ahead before you make a purchase. Think about what you need the device for and consider all of the features it offers and how it will fit in with your life. Remember, these devices are here to work for you, not the other way around. Also, take the time of year into consideration as many deals can be found earlier in the year, and make sure you’re not buying a product right before a company is about to release it’s next big thing. Making your purchase should be a planned event and not spontaneous, do your research at home where theres no sales person trying to push you. Walk into a store well informed about the devices your interested in and that way you’ll have some confidence when it comes to making smart decisions on what you’re buying.

A little research can save you big headaches later on, look into the details like storage space for example. Do you have enough space for what your doing? Can you upgrade the device later on if your needs change? Answering these questions only takes a few minutes and the benefits are huge.

What’s not so great about the latest and greatest? Well, if you have ever bought something when it was just released you will most likely have figured out that waiting might have been a better idea. Rushing out and buying the latest can leave you to deal with all of the new bugs that come with your device. Although most new products go through varying amounts of testing in-house, the biggest test comes along on launch day. Sometimes it’s best to wait a month or so after a new product hits the market then check online forums to see and any undesirable functionality has been occurring like things failing or major glitches.

Reviews have been an extremely popular way to help you decide on what to buy next, but I caution you to take these reviews with a grain of salt. Firstly, many manufacturers will submit their own positive reviews on a product and can mislead you into thinking they are fellow consumers. This happens on more then just electronic devices, these fake reviews can pop up anywhere, like for apartments.

Sometimes you can get someone who has has a bad experience but it’s only limited to one bad unit. These people have had a truly poor experience because they happened to be unlucky enough to get the oddball defective unit. The best way to jude a review of a defective unit is to see how easily their problems were resolved, find out how their customer service responded to the problem.

Good customer service is unfortunately very rare these days and should also be considered when choosing a particular brand over another. Good customer service should be considered as a feature of the device. Look into device coverage, you may even find that you can receive discounts towards new products by sticking with that brand for the next upgrade, this happens with video card companies quite often.

Resale value is another thing to consider here, the smart phone market is a great example of how easy it is to save money on your upgrade by selling your old device. Chances are that old Android device or iOS device will sell really well, mostly because consumers have realized that they can get a great “last generation” phone for a great price from those who absolutely have to have the next best thing. This means that you too can get a great deal, look on online auction sites around the time a new product like the new iPhone is released and I’m sure you will find a ton of great deals.

The best advice that I can offer is to take your time when making decisions. Don’t be the should have, would have, could have person, be the, I planned ahead and made a smart buy person.

iPhone 5 Announcement

September 12, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Apple announced the much anticipated iPhone 5 today which is loaded up with plenty of new features along with a new thinner and lighter design. Overall, I think Apple really has brought the iPhone up to par with what most consumers were expecting or hoping to see in this latest revamp. So here’s a rundown of the major design changes and features to get you up-to-speed.

iPhone5 Black

iPhone5 White

Design Changes

The iPhone 5 is 18% thinner and 20% lighter and now features a larger retina display of 4″,  which is up from the previous 3.5″.The extra screen real estate is nice and it isn’t too overpowering, this extra space will allow for a new row of icons, which I think is pretty nice. The screen is also wide enough to support a 16:9 aspect ratio. Touch sensors are now built in the display which is what allows the new phone to be much thinner.  The glass back has been replaced by mostly metal now which will prevent the phone from cracking if you accidentally drop it. The dock connector and SIM card are also much smaller and the dock connector no longer requires that you have it facing towards the front, it will work both ways.

Power

With the new A6 chip the iPhone 5 will be much faster, up to about 2x as fast. Graphics also get an overhaul here and will deliver a faster, smoother experience when gaming. The battery life promises to be strong by offering 8 hours of browsing, 8 hours of talk, and 10 hours of video playback.

Camera

The new camera will allow you to take panoramic images and will feature the ability to record video in 1080p HD. You will also be able to use the front facing camera for FaceTime, which you will be able to initiate over your cellular network now instead of just Wi-Fi.

Sound

The iPhone has an additional microphone and the speakers get a bit of a touch up by adding more magnets which are supposed to improve audio quality. The phone will support wideband to make voices sound more natural. The speakers have also been designed to take up much less space and offer better noise canceling.

iOS 6

iOS 6 will come already installed on the new device and will feature FaceTime over 3G, Apple Maps, and new updates to Siri, just to name a few.

Network Support

iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE networks as well and claims that battery performance will still be solid despite the power demands of 4G. Wi-Fi performance will also be much better on the iPhone 5 with the addition of 802.11n wireless connectivity.

Price

The iPhone 5 will be priced as follows:

16GB – $199

32GB – $299

64GB – $399

The iPhone 5 will be available in two different colors, black and slate or white and silver.

For complete details on the new iPhone you can head to Apple’s official site.

Wi-Fi or Data Plan?

August 20, 2012 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Just about anywhere you go these days there is a Wi-Fi connection somewhere nearby, and generally it offers great speed and reliability, not to mention most places offer Internet for free. So, why in the world would you need to use your data plan to check your mail or make a quick tweet? I understand that there are many places in which your data plan might be your only option, but unless you need to be constantly checking  your e-mail in the middle of nowhere, it just seems silly. I have many mobile devices that I use day to day and most of them operate full time on a Wi-Fi connection. I can refresh my inbox and download the latest updates for my news apps and just read them on the go. I guess at times you could say it’s a bit like filling up at the gas station and heading out on the road.4G speed tower connection illustration design over white

Let’s face it, data plans today suck. The price hardly justifies the usage and if you’re not on an unlimited plan, using your phones network to access anything could be a stressful task. Data over cellular just is not what it should be, our smart phones have clearly outgrown their networks. To look even deeper into this, think about how this could affect cellular providers.

Why use it at all? Some communities have Wi-Fi everywhere you go. Going into this even further, you realize that some companies  could end up competing with themselves. If only you could break off completely from your data plan in these areas, but wait you can’t. You can’t get that awesome phone with out a data plan and perhaps this is part of the reason why. Remember it’s all about the dollar, broadband prices would skyrocket if there was a universal adaptation to Wi-Fi.

There are many arguments to whether or not Wi-Fi is actually the better option and cellular data has come along way from what it was. Major issues can arise from using Wi-Fi networks especially unsecured networks. How do you know your data is safe? Did the business who is providing  your Wi-Fi connection properly set up security features to protect you ?  Is someone in the corner of the cafe just gobbling up all your good personal information? These are some of the potential drawbacks of using public Wi-Fi.

It would seem that for now a hybrid of both networks is still the best option but I definitely do not need to subscribe to a premium data service with all wireless broadband floating around out there.
