Shigeru Miyamoto Says To Give Wii U Some Time

The Wii U has been around since November of 2012 and it’s not exactly flying off the shelves. I picked up a Wii U my self about a month ago despite my reservations about the new console. After the extremely long initial system update, I got into the Wii U experience rather quickly.

I started out by playing New Super Mario Bros. U and almost immediately, I realized how cool the gamepad was and how seamless the whole experience felt. In many ways I felt like the Wii U is what the Wii should have been from the beginning.

The experience I had is difficult to explain, it’s something you just have to mess with in person to understand how unique and innovative this console is. The Wii U has a lot of potential and this is basically what Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind Mario and Zelda, was trying to say during a recent interview with CNN.

“There was a period when we first released the Nintendo DS that people would say there’s no way people can look at two screens at once, I almost feel like, as people get more familiar with Wii U and these touchscreen interfaces, that there is going to come a point where they feel like ‘I can’t do everything I want to do if I don’t have a second screen’.”  -Miyamoto

I think another major issue behind the Wii U’s lack luster sales numbers is the lack of content for the console. The games drive the console more than anything and Nintendo has promised that there will be plenty of games to choose from as time goes on. A title like the Legend of Zelda is enough to sell the console by it self and that may just be what many people are waiting for.

iOS 7 Concept Video

April 5, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Federico Bianco has created a concept video showcasing many desired iOS features that we will hopefully see in iOS 7. Currently it’s rumored that iOS 7 is running behind schedule but when it does become available the timing will likely pair nicely with a new hardware release (iPhone 5S ?).

Thanks, MacRumors

This is supposedly a picture of the “Samsung Galaxy S Tab”. This is not an official picture by any means but it does look really nice and it would make a lot of sense for Samsung to continue to evolve the tablet from one of what I believe is their best products, the Samsung Galaxy line.

Here’s what we expect to see inside:

Ruling Says Digital Content Can’t Be Resold

April 1, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

As digital content begins to play a bigger role in our society we have to begin to try to understand it more and that includes in what ways do we actually own our digital goods. When you make a digital purchase your not actually buying something physical.

It’s kind of strange to think about, but what we’re really doing is buying the rights to use the said digital goods. Some people have started to look at this and wondered that if we own specific rights to use something then we should be able to sell those rights to others and we would then be effectively forfeiting our own rights to use the content.Digital Lock

Sounds pretty straight forward right? I give my rights that I bought to you at a discounted price. Well, as always, there is going to be a huge debate on whether this kind of stuff is actually legal or not and considering this is all brand new, we’re going to have to work that out in court.

This is exactly what has just happened as a federal judge in a case involving Capitol Records v. ReDigi, has just ruled that attempting to resell digital goods is illegal.

The general idea keeping this kind of activity alive was based on the first-sale doctrine, which allows someone who has legally purchased copyrighted material to resell it. This sounds like it should apply to digital content as well but the judge decided that even though Redigi makes users confirm that they have no existing copies and that the uploader will no longer have access to the files after the transaction is made, they still make copies despite ReDigi’s efforts.

This presents a clear challenge for companies like Apple who have plans to offer up a type of “used digital content” system. This also makes it less appealing to move to an all digital platform as used movie, music, and gaming stores will become obsolete and there will be no similar alternative.

How To Test Your LCD Monitor Calibration

March 18, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr 1 Comment

LED Abstract Image

If you’re finicky about your LCD displays and you want to make sure you’ve got everything dialed in correctly then there’s a great website you can go to that will help you make sure you’ve got everything right.

The Lagom LCD monitor test pages, offer up a variety of test images that can be used to not only determine proper calibration but overall quality of a particular display. As the website mentions you can also download the images to a USB thumb-drive to test displays is a retail environment. I used this page today to recalibrate my LCD monitor and it looks much better.

It can be difficult to tell sometimes whether things are off or not by simply looking at a photograph and that’s why these test pages really help. Just make sure you follow the instructions carefully and you will be on your way to display calibration perfection.

Want to know what color depth your display and graphics hardware are currently using? You can head to NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) reference test page here.
