Where is the Network Utility in OS X Mavericks?

March 26, 2014 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

 OS X Network Utility icon

In OS X the network utility has been a efficient and convenient way to perform basic tests on your network like ping , trace route, netstat, whois, finger, and port scan. The utility provides all of these tools with the benefit of having a nice graphical user interface to work with (GUI).

The Network Utility has always been included with the installation of OS X and it still is with Mavericks, but it’s no longer in your main applications folder. It has been moved to (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications).

  • You can easily find the Network Utility in OS X Mavericks by Using Spotlight (the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the screen) and Typing “Network Utility”.

How To: Fix iPhone Autocorrect Without Turning It Off

November 6, 2013 by Karlene Leave a Comment

If you text on your iPhone, and start typing but the phone doesn’t recognize the word you’re trying to type, it will autocorrect it to what it thinks you meant to say, and it’s often way off. If you’re like me, quickly typing through a text, the autocorrect is otherwise very useful as it does a pretty good job most of the time.

I like to have autocorrect turned on for the words it does get right and so just turning it off doesn’t work for me. For the those words that just don’t seem to ever autocorrect to what you want, you can use the “shortcut” feature in iOS to correct this issue.

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Go into Settings > General > Keyboard.
  •  Select “Add New Shortcut” at the bottom of the list.
  • In the section that says “Phrase” type the word you want the phone to learn.

The “Shortcut” option is optional, and is for shortening your phrase, for example: Phrase- “On my way”. Shortcut- “omw”.  If it’s just one word you do not need to add the shortcut.

There you have it, so easy. Add more words as you wish and the autocorrect will bother you no more! Yay!

October 18, 2013 by Karlene Leave a Comment

If you are like me and love building garage kits, but can never find any good information on products to use and detailed tutorials, you have come to the right place, because I finally found it!

Leona’s Workshop is a YouTube channel (and website) I stumbled upon while searching for useful and vital information before beginning on my own garage kit.  I have never found such useful tips and guides before. She has a very good tutorial about what tools and products to use. As for her building videos, they are easy to follow and she has a high standard for detail which makes the tutorials worth it.

So if you haven’t already, go check it out!

How To: Use the Mac Version of Ctrl-Alt-Delete

October 5, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

forceQuitMenuOSX

In the world of Microsoft Windows when things hang up and freeze we can often get out of trouble by pressing the all so familiar key combination, Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Once we get our program menu open we can force close the frozen application and hopefully continue on like nothing ever happened.

Just like any computer Macs freeze up too, and just like with Windows, it’s often because of a locked up or frozen application that needs to be closed. OS X has a similar key combination that will bring up the force quit menu and allow you to easily force quit any misbehaving app.

To open the force quit menu in OS X simply press:

Command (Apple Key)+ Option + Escape (Esc) all at the same time.

* Alternatively, you can also force quit applications on the Dock by Control Clicking (Right Clicking) a running app to open the menu and then by pressing the Option Key to reveal the Force Quit option.
