Earth and Moon As Seen From Saturn

It’s not too often that we see our world from afar but when we do it’s truly an amazing and humbling experience. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft was able to get into position next to the great planet of Saturn and take a look back at Earth from 900 million miles away. The image is in color and in high resolution, Earth is nothing but a blue dot with a small white dot next to it, that white dot is the Moon of course. Saturn’s rings reflect sunlight towards the camera and against the black backdrop of outer space, it looks truly beautiful.

Cassini’s picture reminds us how tiny our home planet is in the vastness of space, and also testifies to the ingenuity of the citizens of this tiny planet to send a robotic spacecraft so far away from home to study Saturn and take a look-back photo of Earth.” Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

As NASA points out, pictures like these are very rare because Earth appears very close to the sun at that distance and trying to take a picture could ruin the camera’s sensitive electronics with that much sunlight hitting it. This is just one section of an image that will become a mosaic of Saturn’s rings. You can read the original article and see a full-resolution version of this image from NASA.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Gets Emmy Nomination

July 19, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Halo4forwarduntodawn

The Academy of Television Art & Sciences has nominated Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn for an Emmy in Outstanding Main Title Design. Forward Unto Dawn is a live-action web-series  based on the game Halo and it is definitely worth watching. They are 15 minute episodes that look great and are well produced, this is something that is usually pretty rare when it comes to any live-action productions based on a video game.

Thanks to Destructiod for the update.

Yes, it’s that wonderful time of year when the world gets a little geekier. It’s Comic-Con!

The international convention started in 1970 and it is now the most recognized convention of it’s type with over 100,000 joining the party. It’s an awesome celebration of what we love including not only comics but films, science fiction/fantasy literature and much more.

Special guests make appearances, often by surprise, including those behind the creation of our beloved comics. The action is already underway as things kick off with preview night.

Bid on Items From Playstation “Greatness” Commercial

July 16, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

Playstation had a big hit with their “Greatness” commercial but it didn’t happen overnight. Many hours were spent custom building just about everything you see on screen. So it would be kind of waste to just store it all away right?

Well apparently Sony was thinking the same thing when they created the site Bid For Greatness which will allow players to bid on items from the commercial. All of these items are unique hand-made and well crafted items that took hours to make, so naturally they will be expensive right? Wrong, what makes this even better is that you will be bidding on each item using trophies that your earn on Playstation. This makes perfect sense to me, the more you game, the more you get. Even if your not a Playstation fan you can still appreciate the loot, besides I’m sure we will see them popping up on eBay.

Possible Images and Video of Low Cost iPhone

July 6, 2013 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

There has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not Apple will be announcing a lower cost iPhone made from mostly plastic. Many “leaks” have been showing up recently and now it seems we are getting a real good look at what might be coming this fall as Techdy claims to have the real outer shell of the highly rumored and much anticipated phone.

Techdy believes that the outer parts of the phone are indeed a polycarbonate material and that it has a 4″ screen just like the current iPhone. Techdy has even put together a little video showing of the shell.

Whether or not this is real, it definitely looks like something Apple would put together but it could also be just a cheap replica of the current iPhone that’s meant to run some obscure OS.  I’m not really sure what Apple has in store for a lower cost iPhone but I do hope they create one. It will be interesting to see how they price the phone and how it will compete against other more economical phone solutions.
