How to Enable a Port on a Cisco Switch

May 28, 2017 by Richard Vincenti Jr 4 Comments

Need to enable a port on a Cisco switch? Look no further!

To begin you need to know what the name of the port is that you want to enable on the switch. This name or Port ID can be found by using the following command.network cables

#show interface status

This command will provide a list of your ports by ID.

For this example, we will use the port Gi1/10 for our switch.

Next, we need to enter privileged EXEC mode on the switch in order to issue the following commands.

To do this, type one of the following commands.

#enable

or

#en

Now, we need to enter configuration command followed by terminal to enter global configuration mode.

#configure terminal

or

#conf t

Next, we tell the switch which interface to configure.

(config)#interface Gi1/10

Now you can assign the selected port to a VLAN. You can use whatever VLAN number you would like but for our example we will use VLAN 10.

(config-if)#switchport access vlan 10

Lastly, we want to bring this port (interface) up or enable it. To do use one of the following commands.

(config-if)#no shutdown

or

(config-if)#no shut

That’s it. Your port should now be enabled and assigned to the VLAN you choose. You can to this to any other available port on your switch. If you want to add other ports to this same network then simply repeat this process using your other port ID’s and assign them to the same VLAN.

If you would like to check on the status of the port (interface) that you just set up use the following commands.

Exit config mode by performing one of the following methods.

Use Ctrl-Z to exit configuration mode.

or

Type “exit” until you are out of configuration mode.

(If you followed this example you will likely need to enter the exit command two times in a row.)

Lastly, we can now show the status of the port(interface) you choose by entering the following command. We are going to stick with our example port for this command.

#show run interface Gi1/10

Buddy the Futuristic Dog Collar

August 18, 2015 by Richard Vincenti Jr Leave a Comment

With wearable technology slowly working it’s way into our everyday lives, it was only a matter of time before we got man’s best friend involved. This new futuristic dog collar called Buddy, is the ultimate must-have gadget for geeky pet owners.

‘Buddy’ will keep track of just about everything you could ever want to know about your dog, starting with temperature. No longer will you have to wonder if your dog is getting too uncomfortably hot or cold, you will now know the exact temperature of your four legged friend. In the event that your dog does get to hot or cold ‘Buddy’ can actually link into your Nest thermostat to have the temperature automatically adjusted.

With Geofences, you will be able to set a perimeter that your dog is allowed to be in by simply using an app for either iOS or Android. Once your dog leaves the perimeter that you set up, you will be notified with an alert. Even better, ‘Buddy’ will include GPS tracking so you can know exactly where your dog is.

To keep your pup in top shape, the Buddy collar will also include an activity tracker to measure how much exercise your dog is getting. This feature could also benefit some owners as it will persuade us to get up and get active with our pets. Need to know how much your pet is eating? Well, it keeps track of that too. How about appointments with the veterinarian? Yes, it keeps track of this information as well.

And last but certainly not least, it’s quite stylish. The Buddy collar has customizable LED lights that can be adjusted to pretty much any color you can imagine. Plus, having a well lit Buddy collar is great for safety as it provides ample night time lighting so drivers and cyclists will not only see you, they will see your pet as well.

All of these features of course are going to come at a premium, after all this isn’t your basic everyday pet store collar here. If you back the Buddy project early you will get the collar at a discounted price of $180 US. If the collar is fully funded and released for purchase, it could set you back approximately $450.

How To: Fix iPhone Autocorrect Without Turning It Off

November 6, 2013 by Karlene Leave a Comment

If you text on your iPhone, and start typing but the phone doesn’t recognize the word you’re trying to type, it will autocorrect it to what it thinks you meant to say, and it’s often way off. If you’re like me, quickly typing through a text, the autocorrect is otherwise very useful as it does a pretty good job most of the time.

I like to have autocorrect turned on for the words it does get right and so just turning it off doesn’t work for me. For the those words that just don’t seem to ever autocorrect to what you want, you can use the “shortcut” feature in iOS to correct this issue.

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Go into Settings > General > Keyboard.
  •  Select “Add New Shortcut” at the bottom of the list.
  • In the section that says “Phrase” type the word you want the phone to learn.

shortcut iphone

The “Shortcut” option is optional, and is for shortening your phrase, for example: Phrase- “On my way”. Shortcut- “omw”.  If it’s just one word you do not need to add the shortcut.

There you have it, so easy. Add more words as you wish and the autocorrect will bother you no more! Yay!
